6. Decide which colors to use. There’s always the option to go with something unusual such as bright pink or green hair for manga characters, but I’m going to keep the hair a more natural dark brown and introduce a bright neon pink to the outfit. Keep your color palette limited for maximum effect, perhaps using just one or two more vibrant colors to set things off.

7. With a left-hand light source in mind, place shadows more towards the right and around the fold lines using a darker tone. If you’re using colored pencils or paint, don’t just add black to your original tone to make things darker or the colors will look muddy. So if you’re coloring skin, you might want to start with a peach tone, then use a brown tone for the shading.
